Kingston, Jamaica- June 20, 2024
Five Jamaicans living overseas have been honoured with the 2024 Governor-General’s Achievement Award (GGAA) to recognise their outstanding contributions to Jamaica and the Diaspora during the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference at the Montego Bay Conference Centre on June 19, 2024.
This year’s recipients are Steven Getten and Mark Henry from Canada, Dr. Dahlia Ann Blake from the USA, Dr. Pearl Ann Jarrett from the UK, and Roy “Gramps” Morgan who was awarded under this year’s special recognition category.
His Excellency, The Governor-General, congratulated the awardees, stating, “these exemplary individuals highlight the strength and resilience of the Jamaican spirit, no matter where they are in the world. Their dedication and contributions not only enhance their communities abroad, but also strengthen the bonds with our beloved homeland, thereby underscoring that there is nothing wrong with Jamaica that cannot be fixed by what is right with Jamaica, including the outstanding efforts of those living overseas.”
The recipients were ecstatic upon receiving their awards and expressed that this award is a privilege offered to any one in the diaspora that has realised that doing what they love can translate to honouring yourself and the country, while propelling your work to higher heights.
“I am so humbled and honoured to have received this reward from The Governor-General. It truly is a testament of hard work. There are many awards I’ve received and especially throughout the music industry, but this one is very special to me because I’m recognised for the works that go unseen. I’m thankful that The Governor-General and his team are seeing the works that I’m doing as a philanthropist – as my intent is to be a role model and in a positive light, not by purpose or plan, but by just being a good person overall,” said ‘Gramps’ Morgan.
