I am deeply saddened by the passing of Lady Bustamante ‘Lady B’ as she was affectionately called by all Jamaicans.
Lady Bustamante played a seminal role in nation building and provided a steady hand to help maintain unity and social cohesion at some of the most difficult times in our history. She was a humble and distinguished person, someone who did not allow her position in society to cause her to lose touch with ordinary people.
Her work in the social and political arenas as well as the trade union movement touched many lives. She was truly a forerunner of what is today regarded as social transformation, through her dedication to improving the social conditions of workers and their families.
As the country mourns her passing, we can honour her memory by abiding by the principles and values of honesty, selflessness, loyalty, respect and compassion, which were embodied in her character. She will be missed by all but has left a rich legacy which we should treasure for generations.
I extend condolences to her family and friends at this time of bereavement.
