The Governor-General’s Remarks-75th Anniversary – The Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Jamaica 580 Branch

As Patron of the Royal Air Forces Association, Jamaica Branch, I am pleased to join your members on this occasion celebrating the Association’s 75th anniversary of patriotic service to our country and for the launch of the Adopt-a-Veteran and Wings Appeal fundraising initiatives.

RAFA continues to execute an admirable Programme in expressing appreciation to our brave war Veterans and our JDF Air wing servicemen especially in their sunset years.

For the past seventy-five years, the Association responded to the needs of our vulnerable Veterans who are housed at Curphey Home in Manchester, as well as non-residential members, who are equally vulnerable.

I take this opportunity to commend the Chairman and the Executive, the members of the Jamaica Defence Force and volunteers who have given of their time and talent  in support of the Association and its fund-raising activities.

Over the past four years, the Jamaica 580 Branch has partnered with the Jamaica Combined Cadet Force to introduce Wings Appeal in schools in order to raise the awareness among our youth.

Each year, cadet units at secondary schools island wide compete to raise funds and vie for The Governor-General’s Trophy, the President’s Trophy and the Chairman’s Trophy. Today we will present those Awards and recognise the young people for their outstanding efforts.

The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously affected the ability of RAFA to raise funds.  However, Corporate Jamaica, Ex-Servicemen’s Association in the United Kingdom and Canada and private individuals have made generous contributions that have enabled the continued support of the residents and the upkeep of the physical infrastructure at Curphey Home.

On behalf of RAFA, I express sincere thanks to all who have contributed to this worthy cause. The Wings Appeal and the Adopt-a-Veteran are two of the major fund-raising projects planned for this year, and I crave your support for them.

I am confident that despite the challenges, this Association will remain:

  • a vibrant symbol of bravery, and,
  • a true demonstration of your Motto “Not for Ourselves Alone”

Ladies and Gentlemen, join me in wishing RAFA a “Happy 75th Anniversary.”
