WELCOME ADDRESS BY
HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST HONOURABLE
SIR PATRICK ALLEN ON, GCMG, CD
FOR JIM/GLEANER OF THE YEAR AWARD 2012
In 1834 the first edition of the Gleaner newspaper was published in Jamaica. Over the next 179 years what started out as a four-page weekly publication grew step by step, overcoming many obstacles along the way. In large measure, this growth and the respect which the Gleaner Company enjoys are the fruit of good leadership and effective management.
Well over a century later, in 1967, a group of businessmen collaborated in the establishment of The Jamaica Institute of Management, now the JIM/UTECH School of Advanced Management. Their objective was the promotion of top quality, professional management in Jamaica. Their experience in our then newly independent state sharpened their awareness of the need to develop a cadre of good managers and to foster a culture of best practices in management and business. Theirs was the vision of preparing the business sector and by extension Jamaica, to seize opportunities during difficult and challenging times. The successful performance of those companies whose managers have had the benefit of training or affiliation with JIM attest to the value of that vision.
JIM and the Gleaner Company share a commonality of purpose in their endeavour to develop, mentor and reward good leadership and affirm excellence. It is not surprising therefore that both institutions have joined forces to create the JIM/Gleaner Manager of the Year Award to recognize excellence in management across various industries and sectors in the economy.
As is customary, candidates for the 2012 award are drawn from a wide cross section of industries including banking and finance, manufacturing, telecommunications, the distributive trade, tourism and the public sector. They represent companies that operate locally and in the Diaspora. They are individuals who are at the top of their field, are highly regarded and well respected by their peers and subordinates alike. Their professionalism, dedication and commitment, and the resoluteness with which they make management decisions and apply best practices, are positive examples that must be replicated in other areas of national life. I commend each of you for the way you make your mark in Jamaica and so contribute to building our nation.
This joint initiative to establish the JIM/Gleaner Manager of the Year Award has always impressed me. Recognition and awards programmes do more than pay tribute to their recipients. This award reinforces good management practices and encourages other managers to emulate the examples of the awardees. The cumulative effect will redound to the socio-economic advantage of our country.
Significantly, this awards programme speaks to your confidence in and commitment to the future of Jamaica. Thank you JIM/UTECH and The Gleaner Company for believing that our people have the ability to grow Jamaica and make it the place to live, work, raise families and do business. Thank you for acknowledging and encouraging our entrepreneurs who are pressing towards the realization of this national objective.
I congratulate the nominees for the JIM/Gleaner Manager of the Year Award. Only one person can be selected Manager of the Year. However, your nomination is a reflection of the tremendous contribution which you have made to your respective companies and to the development of professional management in Jamaica. I wish for each of you continued success and that you will have the satisfaction not only of a solid, profitable business, but also of having made a positive impact on the lives of our people.
Thank you and may the Best Person win!
