The Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Jamaica 580 Branch chapter launched its annual Wings Appeal fundraiser at a ceremony in the Drawing Room of King’s House on September 5. The launch comes ahead of a planned week of activities by members of RAFA, which will mark the battle of Britain that took place in 1940.

The fundraiser, which has been in existence since 1951, will be used to garner financial support for serving and retired members of the RAFA and for war veterans who fought in World War II.

Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen, in his remarks at the launch, noted that it was fitting to show appreciation for the dedication and service of the ex-service officers who, he said, gave so much of themselves to the world and their country. The brave officers were instrumental in warding off enemy forces who threatened an invasion on England at that time.

“Their commitment to service is undoubtedly an inspiration to succeeding generations of service officers, in particular the men and women of the Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing,” said the Governor-General.

Sir Patrick Allen called on Jamaicans to join him in supporting the Association; contributions, he noted, would help to provide for the welfare and necessary specialist care of the brave service personnel.

The Governor-General thanked members of the association and reminded them that “The lives you touch, especially in the areas of search and rescue, and medical reconnaissance, are a testimony of your commitment,” said the Governor-General.
