Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen received the Letters of Credence from the Ambassador-designate of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Jamaica, Her Excellency Elza Moreira Marcelino de Castro, on Friday 15th October at King’s House.

In an exchange of courtesies, The Governor-General warmly welcomed the new Ambassador to Jamaica, and asked that she convey greetings and best wishes to her President and the people of Brazil.

“I want to wish you a productive tour of duty and I hope that the friendship Jamaica has with Brazil is further deepened and strengthened during your tenure” Sir Patrick Allen said.

As at 8th October 2021, Brazil had recorded over 21.5 million cases of COVID-19 infections with approximately 600,000 deaths. The Governor-General expressed his sadness about the situation, describing it as ‘traumatic.’

On a more positive note, the new Ambassador shared that her country was able to slow the rate of spread of the virus through vaccination and that “90% of the population is completely vaccinated.”

Ambassador Marcelino also said Brazil is willing to continue multi-lateral corporation with Jamaica. “I will do my best to help deepen our future relationship. I am sure my work will be much easier from the assurance you have given,” Ambassador Marcelino told The Governor-General.

Jamaica and Brazil enjoy strong bilateral relations under the 1997 Technical Cooperation Agreement in areas such as agriculture, energy, education, health and security. Both countries established diplomatic relations on 14th October 1962.
