Governor-General, His Excellency, Sir Patrick Allen, has expressed shock and regret at the passing of the Honourable Lascelles Chin, OJ, CD, describing him as a patriot, an astute businessman, dedicated philanthropist, and gentle giant whose dignity, enthusiasm, and compassion were legendary.
Sir Patrick said Mr. Chin was a visionary whose bold initiatives had a profound impact on the food distribution, financial and pharmaceutical services in Jamaica. His passion, determination to achieve success despite the odds, and his love for Jamaica led to many lasting contributions to national development. He was a tireless, committed champion of the Private Sector, and wanted to make Jamaica a better place.
The Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence benefitted from Mr. Chin’s support and personal interest. He was also a Director of the King’s House Foundation.
Sir Patrick observed that Mr. Chin’s unique system of recognition of the country’s Police, Teachers and Nurses is testament to some of the many areas in which he worked humbly and quietly without fanfare. The Governor-General said each year, he looked forward to receiving Mr. Chin on Courtesy Calls when he came to present the individuals who were nominated in each category.
“Jamaica has lost a great Jamaican who inspired and touched the lives of many in a very meaningful way”, The Governor-General said, noting that Mr. Chin’s autobiography will be a source of inspiration to present and future generations. Sir Patrick added, “As we mourn and celebrate the life of this remarkable Jamaican and recall the vision he had for our country, our greatest tribute will be to carry on the outstanding legacy that he has left behind. Lady Allen and I and the Staff at King’s House extend our sincere condolences to his widow, Eileen, other family members, the Staff at the LASCO Affiliated Companies, colleagues and friends.”
