Governor-General His Excellency the Most Honourable Patrick Allen will host a Youth Consultation on Friday May 15, 2009 at the Caymanas Golf and Country Club. The consultation which forms a part of the Governor-General Achievement Awards Scheme (GGAAS) will be held under the theme ‘I Believe’ and will involve a select group of students from the county of Middlesex. They will have the opportunity to meet with the Governor-General and voice their opinions, dreams and visions for themselves and Jamaica.
The consultation is also intended to encourage young people to participate in civic activities, to achieve more in their communities and to encourage their peers to be keen and thorough in both academic work and philanthropy. His Excellency will also use this opportunity to inspire the youth to believe in their ability to do more at the community level. This is in keeping the view expressed at his inauguration that, ‘I believe that there is nothing that is wrong with Jamaica that cannot be fixed by what is right with Jamaica’.
The Governor-General’s Achievement Award Scheme was established in 1991 to acknowledge and award the meaningful contribution of individuals at the community level. The Awards Scheme celebrates the success of volunteers and highlights the impact of the award recipients on community and national life. In 2006 the Governor-General’s Youth Award of Excellence was introduced to promote excellence as a habit among young people.
