Good morning.
I welcome you to King’s House for the swearing-in of Judges to
the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal for the Easter Term.
Today you assume great responsibilities and new roles. I know that
the road ahead will be challenging at times, but given your knowledge
and talents which have been recognized and rewarded by the Judicial
Service Commission’s , I am confident that your assigned tasks and
duties will be executed at the highest level.
I share the sentiments of President Obama, speaking in connection
with the retirement of Justice David Souter, when he said: ‘I view that
quality of empathy, of understanding and identifying with people’s
hopes and struggles, as an essential ingredient for arriving at just
decisions and outcomes’.
And so I charge you today to continue rendering judgments with
empathy and understanding of our society’s diversity. And I encourage
you to continue serving with humility and dedication.
I congratulate the following Judges who will be appointed this
morning and wish you the best in your new assignments:
Acting Judges of Appeal:
The Honourable Mr. Justice Kissock Laing The Honourable Mrs. Justice Georgiana Fraser
Acting Puisne Judges:
Master Pamela Mason
Her Honour Miss Opal Smith
Her Honour Mrs. Tracey-Ann Johnson Master Stephany Orr
Acting Masters-in-Chambers
Her Honour Mrs. Luciana Jackson
Her Honour Miss Christine McNeil
Congratulations to you all and best wishes. I leave you with these
words from Chief Justice Roberts of the U.S. Supreme Court, when
making a ruling, “It can stir people to action, move them to tears of both
joy and sorrow, or inflict great pain.”
Thank You.
