King’s House, Jamaica- Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen hosted the highly
anticipated Governor-General’s Medal of Honour Ceremony on 28th September, 2023 in the
Ballroom at King’s House.
The Governor-General’s Medal of Honour was originally scheduled to be conferred during
Her Late Majesty’s The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Unfortunately, Her Late Majesty passed away before the ceremony could take place. The distinguished recipients of this medal represent a diverse cross-section of society and have rendered exceptional service to King’s House throughout Sir Patrick’s tenure.
In addressing the recipients and their guests during the ceremony, sir Patrick remarked,
“Your work has not just enriched our organization and our country, but it has touched countless lives. The beauty of service, of commitment, is its ripple effect. You have not just uplifted an institution, you have uplifted a society, a generation, and perhaps even generations yet unborn”.
A Medal of Honour is an Award that is given by a country’s Head of State to citizens for the performance of exemplary deeds or service to the country or fellow citizens, for patriotism, sacrifice, integrity, and commitment. The Medal is made of gold, silver, and bronze gilt and was designed by Major David Rankin-Hunt, Norfolk Herald of Arms at the College of Arms, and was approved by The Queen.
The Medal is awarded to persons in the following categories:
Former and Current Privy Councillors
Former and Current Custodes
Former Governor-General’s Secretaries
Former Aides-de-Camp
Former National Coordinators of The Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence
(GGPE)
Members of the Advisory Board – The Governor-General’s Programme for Excellence
Members of the King’s House Foundation
Members of The Governor-General Jamaica Trust
Members of Staff of King’s House who have served for 10 years or more
Close Protection Officers, and other Security Officers
Private and Public Sector Representatives
The Medal is also awarded to deserving individuals who do not fall into these specific categories.
The presentation is the 2nd of 3 scheduled medal presentation ceremonies, the next will be in December of this year.
