His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen and the Most Honourable Lady Allen will leave the island on Thursday May 31, to participate in Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in London for Her Majesty The Queen, on behalf of Jamaica. Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne on February 6, 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI. Her Coronation, at Westminster Abbey, followed on June 2, 1953. The period June 2 – 5 is called Central Weekend to mark 60 years of The Queen’s reign.
While in London, Sir Patrick and Lady Allen will attend the following events from June 2 – 5: the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant, the BBC concert at Buckingham Palace, a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral and receptions that are being planned by Buckingham Palace, the Commonwealth Society and the Jamaican High Commission. He will join new High Commissioner to London Her Excellency, Aloun Assamba at a reception for the Diaspora as part of our 50th Independence celebration.
Jubilee celebrations began in Jamaica in March with the visit of His Royal Highness Prince Henry (Prince Harry) and will continue throughout the year in Britain and the Commonwealth. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons: anetwork of 2,012 Beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Commonwealth. In Jamaica, Beacons will be lit on June 4 at St. William Grants Park in Kingston, the Port Antonio Town Centre, Portland; Seville in St. Ann and at the Civic Centre in Montego Bay, St. James.
Custos of Kingston, the Honourable Steadman Fuller will deputise as Governor General during Sir Patrick’s absence until June 6.
