King’s House, Jamaica – His Excellency Sir Patrick Allen has issued a Proclamation marking 7th January 2023 as ‘UWI Day’. The Proclamation was presented by Sir Patrick to Professor Dale Webber, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the West Indies this morning.
The Proclamation invites all citizens of Jamaica to “reflect on the achievements of this important institution and to participate actively in the celebratory activities that will be held throughout this anniversary year.”
This year, the University of the West Indies celebrates its 75th anniversary. It was established in 1948 as “a University College in special relationship with the University of London” and given its own Royal Charter as an autonomous institution in 1962.
Since its inception, the University has graduated over one hundred thousand students from various disciplines and is the oldest institution of higher learning in the Commonwealth Caribbean.
