Governor-General Sir Patrick Allen has sent a letter to Bahamian Governor-General His Excellency The Right Honourable Cornelius Smith expressing sympathy on the severe damage and  loss of life as a result of hurricane damage experienced during the past week.

Describing the rising death toll as “distressing,” Sir Patrick  said, “This unprecedented occurrence could hardly have been foreseen or prevented, and its regrettable consequences will be with you for a long time to come. We trust that the early assistance from regional and international entities will have minimized further loss of life and that the recovery efforts will be as speedily undertaken as possible.”

Sir Patrick said Jamaica joined with the leaders of  neighbouring countries and all citizens of goodwill, in praying for  favourable weather conditions for the rest of the hurricane season.  He added, “We also support your efforts to adopt such relevant recovery strategies as will reduce the prospects of future disasters such as this most recent one.

“I am aware of the efforts being undertaken here in Jamaica to support the Government and people of the Bahamas in your recovery effort.  Lady Allen and the Staff of the Office of The Governor-General join me in these expressions of concern and encouragement,” The Governor-General said.
