The parish of St Mary now has a new Custos, following the swearing-in of Mr. Jeffrey McKitty, in a ceremony presided over by His Excellency the Most Honourable Sir Patrick Allen at King’s House on January 14.
The Governor-General, in giving his remarks, highlighted Mr. McKitty’s commitment and dedication to serving Jamaica and, in particular, the parish of St Mary. He noted that: “Mr. McKitty is involved in a number of organisations, projects and initiatives geared toward St Mary’s development – he is very passionate about this. It is my pleasure therefore to welcome you, Mr. McKitty, to the position of Custos Rotulorum for the parish of St Mary and to wish for you every success as you continue to serve your parish in this office.”
The appointment takes effect today, January 14, 2013 and follows the retirement of the Honourable Alric Pottinger who served as Custos for the past fourteen (14) years.
In his response Custos McKitty said: “I am grateful to the Hon. Bobby Pottinger, the people of St Mary and you, Your Excellency, for having the confidence to appoint me Custos for the wonderful parish of St Mary. I promise that I will do all in my power to preserve the good name of St Mary and to continue building on the legacy that Mr. Pottinger has left us. I will work to ensure that St. Mary will not fade but get stronger and better as the years go by.”
In addition to his regular duties, a Custos may be asked to serve as Deputy Governor-General in the absence of the Governor-General.
